Recycling controls membrane domains

چکیده
We study the coarsening of strongly microphase separated membrane domains in the presence of recycling of material. We study the dynamics of the domain size distribution under both scalefree and size-dependent recycling. Closed form solutions to the steady state distributions and its associated central moments are obtained in both cases. Moreover, for the size-independent case, the time evolution of the moments is analytically calculated, which provide us with exact results for their corresponding relaxation times. Since these moments and relaxation times are measurable quantities, the biophysically significant free parameters in our model may be determined by comparison with experimental data.

Distinct Membrane Domains on Endosomes in the Recycling Pathway Visualized by Multicolor Imaging of Rab4, Rab5, and Rab11
Two endosome populations involved in recycling of membranes and receptors to the plasma membrane have been described, the early and the recycling endosome. However, this distinction is mainly based on the flow of cargo molecules and the spatial distribution of these membranes within the cell. To get insights into the membrane organization of the recycling pathway, we have studied Rab4, Rab5, an...
متن کاملNonequilibrium raftlike membrane domains under continuous recycling.
We present a model for the kinetics of spontaneous membrane domain (raft) assembly that includes the effect of membrane recycling ubiquitous in living cells. We show that domains can have a broad power-law distribution with an average radius that scales with the 1/4 power of the domain lifetime when the line tension at the domain edges is large. For biologically reasonable recycling and diffusi...
متن کاملDistinct endocytic recycling of myelin proteins promotes oligodendroglial membrane remodeling.
The central nervous system myelin sheath is a multilayered specialized membrane with compacted and non-compacted domains of defined protein composition. How oligodendrocytes regulate myelin membrane trafficking and establish membrane domains during myelination is largely unknown. Oligodendroglial cells respond to neuronal signals by adjusting the relative levels of endocytosis and exocytosis of...
متن کاملD-AKAP2 Interacts with Rab4 and Rab11 through Its RGS Domains and Regulates Transferrin Receptor Recycling*
Dual-specific A-kinase-anchoring protein 2 (D-AKAP2/AKAP10), which interacts at its carboxyl terminus with protein kinase A and PDZ domain proteins, contains two tandem regulator of G-protein signaling (RGS) domains for which the binding partners have remained unknown. We show here that these RGS domains interact with Rab11 and GTP-bound Rab4, the first demonstration of RGS domains binding smal...
متن کاملThe Na+/H+ Exchanger NHE6 in the Endosomal Recycling System Is Involved in the Development of Apical Bile Canalicular Surface Domains in HepG2 Cells
Polarized epithelial cells develop and maintain distinct apical and basolateral surface domains despite a continuous flux of membranes between these domains. The Na(+)/H(+)exchanger NHE6 localizes to endosomes but its function is unknown. Here, we demonstrate that polarized hepatoma HepG2 cells express an NHE6.1 variant that localizes to recycling endosomes and colocalizes with transcytosing bu...
